“BASKET AWARD”
Willamina Middle and High School Students
Willamina Middle School:
Student: Kalai’la Grefsrud-Norwest
Kalai’la is a 7th-grade student who has really improved her attendance. She has a sister who is a 9th grader and a brother who is a senior. Historically, their family has had poor daily school attendance. This is based on various family and personal reasons. I am choosing Kalai’la for the basket award because she is trying to set a positive example for her older sister and brother. She is doing this in ways like making school attendance, getting good grades, being active in sports, and the arts a priority. She is also actively encouraging her brother and sister on a daily basis at home. Her future career plans include becoming a mechanical engineer, and she knows that to attain this goal, she must first build a successful educational career in middle and high school.
Willamina High School:
Student: Aleena Leno
Aleena is a 10th-grade student at Willamina High School. She has improved her attendance and academics this year. She attained straight “A's” first semester and is currently on track to accomplish that same goal for the second semester. She has also improved her attendance. She says the driver of her improvement on academics and attendance is based on trying to set a good example for her classmates. She is not only setting a positive example for her classmates with her attendance and academics, but she is also emerging as a school leader. After graduation, she plans on pursuing a career in nursing.
